What drives SaaS development cost
Two honest SaaS quotes can differ several times over. Almost all of the gap comes from these six factors.
- Scope. The number of user roles, screens and workflows. A product with one core workflow costs far less than one with five, because each needs design, logic, tests and edge cases.
- Multi-tenancy. Keeping each customer's data separate, with team accounts, invitations and roles, touches the database, permissions and nearly every query. It is cheaper to design in from day one than to retrofit. See multi-tenant SaaS architecture.
- Billing. One monthly plan is simple. Free trials, per-seat or usage-based pricing, coupons, proration, GST invoices and failed-payment handling each add work. The gateway matters too: compare Stripe vs Razorpay for SaaS.
- Integrations. Every external system (CRM, accounting, email, WhatsApp, an ERP) needs authentication, error handling and a plan for when the other side is down or changes its API.
- Design. A clean component library is faster than a fully custom design system with bespoke illustrations and motion. Most first versions need clarity, not originality.
- Team type. Freelancers, small studios, larger agencies and in-house hires price differently because their overheads differ. Larger agencies often bill for account and project managers too, and an in-house team adds salaries and recruitment time.
Typical SaaS cost in India by build type
The ranges below are general patterns for Indian studios and agencies, not quotes. Your real number depends on scope, and a good vendor will explain every line of their estimate.
| Build type | What it usually includes | Common market range | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal tool or simple dashboard | Login, a few screens over your data, basic roles, no billing | Around a lakh to a few lakh | 3–6 weeks |
| SaaS MVP | Sign-up, one core workflow, a single subscription plan, a simple admin view | A few lakh to tens of lakhs | 4–8 weeks |
| Multi-tenant SaaS v1 | Team accounts, roles, several workflows, tiered plans, integrations, email | Several lakh to tens of lakhs | 2–4 months |
| AI-powered SaaS | The above plus LLM features, search over private documents and output evaluation | Above a comparable non-AI build, plus model usage | Longer than a non-AI build |
| Complex or high-traffic platform | Many integrations, heavy data, security review, high availability | Tens of lakhs and up | Several months, released in phases |
As a concrete anchor, StackWise's Product Build starts at ₹98,999 (about US$1,050). It covers SaaS products, dashboards and web apps: sign-up, login and user dashboards, Stripe or Razorpay payments and subscriptions, built in Next.js and TypeScript, with 3 months of support. A SaaS typically takes 8–12 weeks and an MVP 4–8 weeks. AI systems, complex platforms and high-traffic APIs get a custom quote. Details are on the pricing page.
How to reduce SaaS cost without creating technical debt
The cheapest way to build is to build less. The expensive way to save money is to cut corners you pay for later.
- 1Launch with one core workflow. Pick the job your first customers will pay for and build it well. Everything else goes on a written "later" list.
- 2Start with one pricing plan. Add tiers, seats and usage billing once you know how customers use the product.
- 3Use proven services for non-core parts. Payments, authentication, email and file storage are solved problems. Integrating them is cheaper than building them.
- 4Prototype before you code. A clickable Figma prototype catches wrong assumptions when they cost an hour to fix, not a week.
- 5Keep tests, security and ownership. Skipping automated tests, input validation or access control saves days now and costs weeks later. Make sure you own the code and every account, or a future change of vendor means a rebuild.

How to get an accurate SaaS quote
Before you ask for quotes, write one page: the users, the workflow that matters most, how you plan to charge, the systems to connect, and any data or compliance constraints. Every vendor then quotes the same product.
A useful quote lists features, exclusions, stack, timeline, change process and post-launch support. At StackWise, minor additions under 10% of scope are absorbed, and larger changes get a quote and timeline adjustment within 24 hours. Whoever you hire, get that rule in writing.
